Los Angeles, Calif. - Each week during the high school season we will announce the SoCal Pitcher and Player of the Week covering the action from the previous week. Numerous players across the state continue to put up impressive numbers both as position players and pitchers on the mound. This year we will be selecting one Pitcher of the Week and one Player of the Week based on recommendations from high school coaches from Southern California.

Continuing from previous seasons, we will also be highlighting others players from across the state in our Prep Baseball California Diamond Notes that will be released weekly. Our Diamond Notes will highlight other players nominated by high school coaches that are deserving of recognition that were not named Pitcher of Player of the Week.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK

JR. RHP Drew Nelson from San Juan Hills High School earns the Prep Baseball California Pitcher of the Week honors after spinning a gem against San Clemente. With San Juan Hills needing an important win ahead of the CIF-Southern Section playoffs Nelson went the distance for a win in which he threw just 76 pitches including 52 strikes and allowed no runs for the CG shutout victory. As well, to put an exclamation mark on a stellar day Nelson punched out 5 hitters without walking a batter. Nelson is a Brown commit.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

This week the Player of the Week honor is being shared by a pair of outstanding D1 commits.

First up is JR. INF Maverek Russell from La Mirada High School who contributed a big week for La Mirada in their 3 game sweep of Gahr. Russell for the week collected 7 hits in 9 at bats. As impressive at 7 hits would be in a single week when 2 of those hits are doubles, and another is a home run while tacking on 6 runs scored with 4 RBIs and drew 2 walks to reach base at total of 9 times in 11 plate appearances. Russell is a UCLA commit.

Sharing the honors for the week is TCU commit SO. OF Eric Zdunek out of Maranatha High School. The future Horned Frog hit .467 over a 4 game week including ones against West Ranch High School and Valencia High School. He struck out 0 times, while collecting 7 hits with 2 doubles in the 4 game week and for good measure he also drove in 5 runs for Maranatha.
